¡ Managed a team of eight engineers responsible for defining all of Nextel Network Engineering’s tool requirements and for providing needed tool training and support. Managed relationships with Network Engineering, IT, and Program Management Office to provide focus and ensure cooperation and on-time product delivery throughout numerous program and organizational changes.
¡ Lead and managed the requirements/development/adoption of a single enterprise tool to support Nextel’s national and local MSO equipment planning activities.
¡ Lead efforts to revamp Nextel’s semi-annual network planning process to allow greater involvement of field personnel and to ensure better communication of network build plans to all of planning and deployment staff resulting in 10+% reduction in capital spending and significantly improved relationships between NHQ and the field.
¡ Led a team of three analysts in a budget variance analysis spanning all WorldCom products. Identified opportunities to reduce capital spending by as much as $1 billion.
¡ Coordinated strategic planning efforts to identify eleven US cities into which UUNET could profitably expand its network.
¡ Managed a team of six field service technicians and over twenty remote contractors responsible for the installation and maintenance of UUNET’s network, growing it from 13 to 34 cities. Created planning and logistics functions to minimize downtime for scheduled maintenance.
¡ Directed a team of four telecommunications specialists who managed vendor relationships and coordinated the installation of over 1000 circuit orders for UUNET's backbone.
¡ Managed the integration of new products and technologies within UUNET Network Operations.
¡ Managed a network data integrity project involving a complete audit of UUNET’s network and the implementation of consistency checking algorithms to maintain database accuracy.
¡ Led the development of comprehensive test plans for all of InterCon’s software products.
¡ Conceived revenue forecasting methodology and developed MS Excel planning tool used by all UUNET finance directors in developing their annual budgets and long-range forecasts.
¡ Designed and built a spreadsheet model linking international revenue forecasts and network traffic load, which was instrumental in forecasting transoceanic cable requirements.
¡ Analyzed the economics of UUNET's peering arrangements with other Internet service providers, and assisted legal and executive staff in revising and rewriting the company's peering policy.
¡ Performed cost analysis of all UUNET’s network access facilities and developed the business case for the RAP (Remote Access Point) that allowed UUNET to profitably connect high speed customers in locations where we did not have a hub.
¡ Analyzed economics of new wireless and satellite technologies for UUNET’s backbone.
¡ Identified inefficiencies in hub architecture to save over $10 million in network hardware.
¡ Defined metrics to measure the operational efficiency and performance of UUNET’s network. Used these metrics to effectively demonstrate that planned network growth outpaced demand.
¡ Designed and built a spreadsheet model to project network capacity requirements on the basis of sales forecasts, network utilization, and quality of service metrics. This model was used to plan UUNET's OC-12 and OC-48 domestic backbone.
¡ Developed network expense budgets in excess of $250 million for UUNET Network Operations.
¡ Conceived, designed, and developed a comprehensive set of Excel tools for planning capacity and reporting utilization of all of Nextel’s MSO elements. These tools are serving as the prototype for an enterprise level network planning tool and for an executive dashboard for reporting network health.
¡ Designed and developed UUNET’s provisioning database which records configurations of all network hardware and which tracks resource allocations. This database was instrumental in forecasting port capacity requirements and planning network hardware deployment.
¡ Designed and developed UUNET’s circuit-orders tracking database.
¡ Conceived the UUNET circuit data model relating all circuit components, including circuit endpoints, circuit segments, carrier systems, vendor, bandwidth, and protocol. This model was essential to the development of monitoring and troubleshooting tools for UUNET’s NOC.
¡ Official liaison to Sales from Operations, providing weekly reports on network activities to the Sales management team. Greatly improved interdepartmental relations by warning Sales of service delivery issues and by championing revenue impacting issues within Operations.
¡ Produced documents detailing UUNET’s network design and products, including backbone maps, hub wiring schematics, and product illustrations. My documents were adapted for use in Executive presentations, Sales/Marketing literature, and publication in industry magazines.
¡ Created and delivered training presentations for WorldCom executives about the design, performance, capacity, and cost of the network. Worked extensively with WorldCom’s Network Planning and Finance teams to help them understand IP networks v. traditional voice and data.
¡ Provided monthly technical training classes on UUNET's network and products for Operations, Sales/Marketing, Customer Support, and Finance.
